Panerai supplied the Royal Italian Navy's frogmen with oversized, luminous instruments; the Luminor case with its lever-locked crown bridge dates from that programme.

The modern Marina keeps the sandwich dial — two discs with luminous compound between them — and the cushion case, now in 44 mm brushed steel.
